POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II’S LETTER TO PRIESTS – 1995 – HOLY THURSDAY ADDRESS

“For priests, no phrase is more rooted in the Theology of the Body than the words of Institution: ‘This is my body, which will be given up for you.’ The Great High Priest first pronounced these words on Holy Thursday two millennia ago as he commenced his Paschal Sacrifice. The body offered is the very same first received from His Mother Mary – Ave verum Corpus natum de Maria Virgine. Thus John Paul II’s Holy Thursday letter to his brother priests begins with a reflection on the primal relationship of every man to his mother. This is the starting point of the priest’s relationship and appreciation of women in his life. As a celibate man, Jesus remains in a unique and loving relationship with His Mother from the Annunciation to the Crucifixion. The Stabat Mater is ever present as a silent and caring support for her Son. Many priests are blessed with similarly strong ties to their own mothers – a gift and a mystery they are able to share with Jesus and Mary…”
