Letter to Pastor

Dear Father,

I have no doubt that you became a priest in large part because of your love for the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.  I also have no doubt that you have been just as alarmed as I have been by surveys indicating the low level of faith among Catholics in the Real Presence.  The bishops of our country have responded with a call for pastoral efforts to focus on Eucharistic Revival.  But how?

Today’s loss of faith in the Body of Christ truly present in the Blessed Sacrament cannot be understood apart from the diabolical assault against the spiritual dignity of the human body unleashed by a pornographic culture.  You know from your own pastoral experience the devastating impact this has.  In short, a culture that frames the human body as a material object of consumption robs us of our ability to see the human body as the holy place of encounter with the divine.  Here, the very logic of the sacraments is lost because the dignity of the body and the material world has been lost.  In turn, many well-meaning but ill-formed Catholics have responded to this rampant materialism with a dis-embodied “spiritualism” that only aggravates the underlying problem.

For such a time as this – and for such a crisis of faith in the Eucharist as this – have we been given the deeply incarnational insights of Saint John Paul II.  Since the early 1990s when I first discovered his teaching, I have given my life’s work to translating his scholarship into language, categories, images, analogies, and stories that enable normal people in the pew to reap the glorious and life-transforming benefits of his teaching.  In all my travels around the United States and the world, the most common response I receive is this: “I’ve been a Catholic my whole life and never heard this.  Why not?!”  That was my response when I first learned of John Paul II’s teaching as well.

My colleagues and I at the Theology of the Body Institute would like to help you spark a Eucharistic Revival in your parish.  We are pleased to share that we have put our extensive experience and expertise at the service of a brand new live event called “THE WELL: An Evening of Beauty, Reflection, and Eucharistic Revival.”

It's not a performance. It's His presence.
