Course Description:
This course presents a tour of the pre-papal thought of St. John Paul II. An introduction to philosophy as a branch of study and to the history of philosophy will be presented as these pertain to Karol Wojtyla as a professor and scholar in that field. Through a close examination of the original philosophical texts of Wojtyla, with emphasis on his personalist anthropology, we will proceed to see how these inform Theology of the Body and the Papal Encyclicals and Letters of St. John Paul II. Instructor:
Dr. Peter Colosi is associate professor of philosophy at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, before that having taught at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia and at the Austrian campus of Franciscan University of Steubenville. He earned his BS in mathematics from Franciscan University, an MA in Franciscan Studies from St. Bonaventure University, and his MPhil and PhD from The International Academy of Philosophy in the Principality of Liechtenstein.
His publications have appeared in: Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture, The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly, The Catholic Social Science Review, Franciscan Studies, among others. He also published “A Catholic Anthropology and Medical Ethics” in Catholic Witness in Health Care (CUA Press, 2017) and “The United States Bishops vs. the HHS Contraception Mandate: A Question of Religious Freedom, Moral Truth or Both?” in Why Humanae Vitae is Still Right (Ignatius Press, 2018).
